The Frontier Spirit of Timberland Boots
Rufty-tufty as a hike through the Appalachians, yet also as cosy and wholesome as a Thanksgiving dinner, Timberland are a true American icon. They have their roots in the New England countryside with its frosty fall season and snowy winters, and they're all about the blue-collar values of true grit and making things that last, but over time they've evolved into a stylish lifestyle accessory for city slickers too. It all began in the early 70s with one key product, the Yellow Boot. In under three decades, the company went from being an obscure small town shoemaker to a global brand with over $1 billion in worldwide sales in 2000.
Origins of a Footwear Legend
The company's co-owners, brothers Sidney and Herman Schwartz, had a master plan: to design footwear that would stand up to the worst the local winters could throw at it, while still looking mighty fine. They found unlikely inspiration in a beloved pair of old work boots worn by one of their factory maintenance men. After some hard graft, the Timberland Yellow Boot was born. With signature blond leather seamlessly bonded to soles moulded from synthetic rubber, it was 100% waterproof, as they determined with vigorous testing. As well as going down well with outdoorsy types, it was a hit with college kids and hip New Yorkers. Then it the 1980s, it became a must-have for Italians hankering after a piece of authentic Americana.
The Timberland Collection
Since those days, the company has gone through periods of expansion and retraction, but it's never lost its knack for blending utility and fashion. The original Yellow Boot is now part of the 6-Inch walking boot range of all weather footwear in premium waterproof full grain leather. With their burnished finish and elastic sides, the emphasis of the Chelsea range is on casual style, but they still boast the hard-wearing, durable construction you'd expect from this brand. Meanwhile, the Chukka range is more relaxed still, padded and comfortable and ideal for off-duty lounging. In addition, Timberland make winter boots, boat shoes, casual shoes and sneakers, both high tops and low tops. Needless to say, women can enjoy their own versions of these classic lines, plus ankle boots in a selection of fetching shades.
From Hand Craft to High Tech
As a heritage brand, Timberland stay true to tried and tested techniques like injection moulding for a waterproof seal, multiple rows of stitching for sturdy construction and leather linings for extra comfort. But they have also kept up with the times by bringing in many exclusive new technologies and materials. These include toasty Primaloft insulation made from recycled bottles and a number of specialist sole rubbers, such as light, bendy SensorFlex and Gripstick for superior traction. Meanwhile features such as OrthoLite insoles (which provide aeration and protection against bacteria) help to keep your feet fresh and odour-free.
